Today architecture in Istanbul is driven largely by the construction industry which doesn't care about issues of architectural value and urban design. You will notice the only very average quality of most of the contemporary architecture around town. Only a few examples over the last 20 years have made any impact. Emre Arolat's Santralistanbul Cultural Center, Emre Arolat's design for the Kagithane Ofispark by Tekfen-OZ (disclaimer, emedya, my web studio office design's Tekfen-OZ's web sites), Nevzat Sayin's SEED conference center at the Sabanci Museum are some notable recent examples of forward looking contemporary architecture in Istanbul.

tamam, i see your view which is looking forward , however are there Architects with the same vision that we now see and admire about istanbul ?.
thank you also for taking the time to break down the view of being static . i guess from someone like me inexperienced in architecture would view the term Static with raised eyebrows !

I understand your point especially your London example. My declaration here has more to do with the future then the past. Istanbul has of course a rich and exciting history that we should value. But fortunately I don't live in the past, I live in the present. I want my present to reflect my values of modernity and contemporaneity while respecting the important (granted a value judgment) aspects of the historic past.

Take a look at this way, 300 years from now the residents of Istanbul looking back will need to say, "Hey, Istanbul at the beginning of the 21st century added this and that to the city's character." In other words, we have to represent our time and our ideas in forms of architecture and design that represent the current reality. Creating a contemporary identity through the archaeology of the past in the present is at best escapism and at worst lazy ignorance. I don't want to be either.

Thanks again for your comment!

I had to read this 3 times to make sure i was not missing the point of point 10:"The image of the city is static". or is point 9 the answer "The concept of the ” historic past “in Istanbul needs to incorporate the developments of the 20th century."every great city in the world has an identity and that stems from history .when you think of Rome ,Paris what comes to mind ?? as two examples .I guess you are forward thinking but I can only say look what happened when London attempted to blend modern state of art Architecture in with its history complete visual disaster.
Im not a designer and I have nothing to do with Architecture in anyway so you may throw my point of view away based on that. But Istanbul to me and millions of others I hear come back because of its diversity that seems to work .please note im only questioning point 10... Istanbul is far from being static or perhaps I have not lived here long enough to become stagnant.

and thanks to @rosedeniz for twittering this ...

The last time I visited Dubai, I was working on a big garage design and install project. I was amazed by the wealth in Dubai, it doesn't surprise me the prices this garage sold at in auction. By the way I love the picture of the towers. I didn't get to see them last time I was there.

[...] İstanbul Metro: an İstanbul architecture, art, and design blog (thanks to Shan J. for the tip). Here’s a great post on the Miniatürk theme park, which I am very impatient to visit, and a short but sweet one on the new takeaway istanbul brand. That last post literally cost me money, since it caused me to send poor Szerelem out to Kanyon to do some shopping for me–most notably, for the Erdem Akan ring featured in the post. (Now I wear the Bosphorus on my finger more days than not, and make jokes about it being my engagement ring to my doctoral thesis…) [...]
